The African American Research Library and Cultural Center is one of a few facilities in the United States to focus on the history of the African American culture. Many of the interior features are designed to incorporate native materials and history from Africa. This project is a new two story structure. The lobby features terrazzo flooring that blends its rich design with two custom built African teak columns. The reception desk also has African teak inlays with black granite countertops. The project includes a performing arts auditorium with seating for 325 people which includes a fully operating fly stage for major productions. Also located on the ground floor is the exhibition area that presents traveling museum exhibits within specially designed display cases. In addition, there are areas designated for rare books and information on family histories that is stored in a special collections room. To protect these valuable artifacts, the facility includes an intergern fire suppression system, standby power and specialized climate control systems.
